Jeremiah 25:4-12

Recently we have had a natural disaster, a man-made disaster, and a moral/Spiritual disaster.

Nearly 5,000 have died in Nepal, there have also so many a few rescue stories.

More than 100 cops injured in the Baltimore riots. It is not being reported how many innocent bystanders were injured. I saw a minute and half video and at least 5 people were beaten or injured by rioters.

The First Amendment gives us the right to protest and assemble but not to riot and destroy.

We need to try to understand the different cultures in America. Rioting is not the answer – violence in not an answer even if there was violence before. We must also not jump to crazy opinions – Cops are not bad, Black people are not criminals, and white people are not racists. Some in each category is true but you can mix up the color and those statements can be true also. Just because we live in Brookville doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take a reasoned approach to the racial tension or police tension in our country.

The third issue:

If the Supreme Court redefines marriage how many lives will be effected and spiritually destroyed?

First – Some Christian Leaders have pledged not to obey the law if the Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage.

“Yes, I’m talking about civil disobedience, I’m talking about resistance and I’m talking about peaceful resistance against unjust laws and unjust rulings.”

I am not sure what that looks like – refusing to perform a same-sex wedding and going to jail.

That is what I have been talking about for years as we have seen this day coming.

What would you say if I agreed to perform same-sex weddings?

The required 3 pre-marital counseling sessions would be the same and I make it clear that the ceremony is a state sanctioned marriage but in God’s it is an abomination.

The state may make me perform the ceremony upon threat of jail but they can’t tell me what to say until preaching the Bible is considered a hate crime and worthy of jail also.

What did Peter say to the religious court of the day and what happened?

Acts 5:29 Peter and the other apostles replied: “We must obey God rather than men! … 40 …They called the apostles in and had them flogged. Then they ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and let them go. …42 Day after day, in the temple courts and from house to house, they never stopped teaching and proclaiming the good news that Jesus is the Christ.

That is civil disobedience – Preach the truth no matter the consequences.

In reality it doesn’t matter what the Supreme Court decides. Why? Because same-sex marriage is already legal in Indiana. (Homosexuals can adopt)

Same-sex marriage is already legal in Indiana since last October because of the 7th Circuit court.


(Same-sex marriage has been legal in Indiana since October 6, 2014, when the U.S. Supreme Court refused to consider an appeal in the case of Baskin v. Bogan.)


Three Judges of the Seventh Circuit wrote, “It is clear that the fundamental right to marry shall not be deprived to some individuals based solely on the person they choose to love. In time, Americans will look at the marriage of couples …and refer to it simply as a marriage–not a same-sex marriage. …The Constitution demands that we treat them as such.”

The issue before the Supreme Court on Tuesday was the (United States Court of Appeals) Sixth Circuit Court (2-1) decision on November 6, 2014.

The 6th circuit wrote, “When the courts do not let the people resolve new social issues like this one, they perpetuate the idea that the heroes in these change events are judges and lawyers,” “Better in this instance, we think, to allow change through the customary political processes, in which the people, gay and straight alike, become the heroes of their own stories by meeting each other not as adversaries in a court system but as fellow citizens seeking to resolve a new social issue in a fair-minded way.”

All this happened after Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was struck down in 2013 by the Supreme Court in a 5 to 4 decision. The Obama administration announced in 2011 that it had concluded Section 3 was unconstitutional and …it would no longer defend the law in court.

DOMA signed into laws by President Bill Clinton in 1996.

(The 2013 case was about a same-sex couple who had been married in Canada in 2007.)

(The widow had a tax bill of over $300,000 since she was not considered a spouse.)

Why do I take time to review the social happenings in America? We need to know how to pray.

1 Timothy 2:1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone– 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

Can I live a peaceful life if I am forced to perform same-sex weddings?

Our local Clerk has to issue same-sex marriage licenses but she or the judges don’t have to perform the marriage. The Indiana Attorney General says they may but they don’t have to. That means that the clerks have to say they will not marry anyone or they could be sued for discrimination. That is what many clerks and judges in Indiana have done.

If I refuse I will be arrested for breaking the law. Right now I am protected (maybe) under the new Religious Freedom Restoration Act. But if the Supreme Court legalizes same-sex marriage there will be no religious exemptions. It will be a Constitutional matter and not a state matter.

JUSTICE SCALIA: asked Obama Administration attorney Miss Bonauto,

I’m concerned about the wisdom of this Court imposing through the Constitution a requirement of action which is unpalatable to many of our citizens for religious reasons. They are not likely to change their view about what marriage consists of. And were the States to adopt it by law, they could make exceptions to what is required for same-sex marriage, who has to honor it and so forth. But once it’s made a matter of constitutional law, those exceptions for example, is it conceivable that a minister who is authorized by the State to conduct marriage can decline to marry two men if indeed this Court holds that they have a constitutional right to marry?

MS. BONAUTO: Your Honor, of course the Constitution will continue to apply, and right to this day, no clergy is forced to marry any couple that they don’t want to marry. We have those protections.

Jim – Right to this day – what about tomorrow when the same-sex proponents want to silence the church.

JUSTICE SCALIA: But right to this day, we have never held that there is a constitutional right for these two people to marry, and the minister is to the extent he’s conducting a civil marriage, he’s an instrument of the State. I don’t see how you could possibly allow that minister to say, I will only marry a man and a woman. I will not marry two men.

What about the issue of Tax exempt status for Christian colleges?

(Churches losing tax-exempt status will not be far behind)

JUSTICE ALITO: Well, in the Bob Jones case, the Court held that a college was not entitled to tax exempt status if it opposed interracial marriage. So would the same apply to a university or a college if it opposed same-sex marriage?

ATTONERY GENERAL VERRILLI: You know, I don’t think I can answer that question without knowing more specifics, but it’s certainly going to be an issue. I don’t deny that.

Jim – What more specifics does he need? The Bob Jones case of 1983 will be cited as precedent and Christian colleges will no longer be tax-exempt unless they quit discriminating against homosexuals.

The Supreme Court in an 8 to 1 decision wrote, “Government has a fundamental, overriding interest in eradicating racial discrimination in education . . . which substantially outweighs whatever burden denial of tax benefits places on [the University’s] exercise of their religious beliefs.”

The Court made clear, however, that it’s holding dealt “only with religious schools—not with churches or other purely religious institutions.”

We live in a society of the promotion of sin like no other.

That is what we think because our view only encompasses the time we have been born.

There have been more evil societies – we have been reading about them in our weekly Bible reading.

God’s people worshiping idols even in God’s Holy Temple. And the practice of sodomy just outside the Temple.

2 Kings 23:7 And he brake down the houses of the sodomites, that were by the house of the LORD, where the women wove hangings for the grove.

Josiah a good and righteous King cleaning up the evil corruption of his father’s reign.

Homosexual sin is not new.

Sodom and Gomorrah were destroyed for this sin.


(What God’s word says about homosexuality – Genesis 19; Leviticus 18:22, 20:13; Judges 19:22; Romans 1:20-32; 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 Timothy 1:10; Matthew 19:3-9).


Homosexuality is not an unforgiveable sin.

1 Corinthians 6:9 Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

No sinner will inherit the Kingdom of God – no sinner will go to Heaven. There is no hope.


1 Corinthians 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

We were sinners but we were washed.

All sinners who repent and are immersed are sanctified and justified by Jesus.

1 Peter 1:18 For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.

Galatians 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, 27 for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.

All sinners can repent and be baptized for salvation – no sin is worse than another.

2 Peter 3:9 [The Lord] is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

That is why God sent prophet after prophet to warn Israel and Judah of the coming disaster.

They refused to repent and follow God’s will. Finally Josiah did lead the nation to repentance but it was too late.

God was bringing forth His punishment.

2 Kings 23:26 Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the heat of his fierce anger, which burned against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke him to anger. 27 So the LORD said, “I will remove Judah also from my presence as I removed Israel, and I will reject Jerusalem, the city I chose, and this temple, about which I said, ‘There shall my Name be.'”

God’s people were exiled because of the nation’s sin but in the warning and punishment there was also hope.

Jeremiah 25:4 And though the LORD has sent all his servants the prophets to you again and again, you have not listened or paid any attention. …8 Therefore the LORD Almighty says this: “Because you have not listened to my words, … I will completely destroy them and make them an object of horror and scorn, and an everlasting ruin. …11 This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. 12 “But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt,” declares the LORD, “and will make it desolate forever.

We may fall as a nation just like Rome fell from within.

Praise God our hope does not rest on the nation of America.

Our hope is in Jesus.

Even if everyone bows the knee to another god and turns their back on the one true God we still have hope.

1 Peter 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade–kept in heaven for you,

Do you have that HOPE today?

Christian rest in your relationship with Jesus no matter the evils that come.

Be faithful to Him even to the point of death and you will receive the crown of Life.

If you want the crown of Life – If you want to live with God for all Eternity accept Him today.

Come repenting of your sins, come believing that Jesus is the only way, and come ready to be baptized for the forgiveness of your sins and the gift of God, the Holy Spirit.
