Have knowledge so you can get ahead in life. Have knowledge so you can get ahead in death.

2 Peter 1:5

What do you need to know – just ask Bo – Bo knows (Bo Jackson commercials).
What do you need to know?
What you need to know in the news, what you need to know about your health, about raising kids, about retirement, about the world around you, on and on.
30 Things You Need To Know To Be Successful In Life
The Top 10 Things Everyone Needs To Know In Life

Do a Google search on what you need to know and you will find thousands of things you need to know. I don’t have the time or the energy to know everything others tell me I need to know.
What do I really need to know? What do you really need to know?

Why is my list this morning better than most of the lists you will find on Google?
You need to know so you won’t be ineffective and unproductive in your faith.
You need to know so that you have a better future.
You need to know so you can get ahead in life – really you need to know what I have to say so you can get ahead in death.

Philippians 3:10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead.
Do you want to know Christ – Do you want to know His power – Do you want to share in Him?
Do you want to attain the resurrection from the dead?
Most people are afraid of death, most people don’t want to die.
Ask someone, How you doing today?
I’m still breathing, I’m not pushing up daisies, I haven’t kicked the bucket.
As a Christian we can look forward to death because we will be with Christ (Phil 1:21).
When we know Christ we will experience the resurrection.
We have to plan for the future – but many are only concerned for the moment.

Peter said add knowledge to your faith.
We will discuss knowledge but what is faith?
Faith is the trusting relationship in God.
Faith is grounded in your knowledge of the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

Faith is more than intellectual agreement. Faith trusts.

In the mid 1860’s, French tightrope walker, Blondin, walked across Niagara Falls in front of a crowd of 100,000 people. He then asked the crowd this question, “Do you believe I can walk across these falls with a man on my back?” The whole crowd cheered, “Yes, we believe!” He then retorted, “Then who wants to get on my back?” Needless to say, no one raised his hand. Blondin’s manager then climbed aboard his back and made the harrowing journey across the Falls.

Those who believed Blondin could carry a man across the falls did not have faith. Faith agrees and trusts. Saving faith believes what Jesus did on the cross and then trusts Him with every aspect of your life.
So when you have real faith you can add knowledge.

2 Peter 1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge;

Last week we discussed adding goodness, moral excellence to your faith.
Adding to our faith is not easy – Peter says “make every effort”, the KJV translates, “give all diligence”
The root Greek word translated effort and diligence means speed.
Add to your faith in haste – Growing in your faith is not something you can get around to, make effort now!
No time like the present – (Round Tuit)

What knowledge do you need to add to your faith?
We need to know Jesus not just know about Him. So we need to spend time with Him, reading His word and praying.

When we move from knowing about Jesus to knowing Jesus, everything changes. We move toward an intimate relationship with Jesus—which teaches us everything we need to know about the most important questions we ask; “Who am I?” “Why am I here?” and “Where am I going?”

Who am I?
Your identity is a creation of God – created in His image.
Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

Your identity is a sinner saved by grace.
Ephesians 2:8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

We are God’s workmanship – God don’t make junk.
God loves you and sent Jesus to die for you. You are greatly loved.
Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

He will not abandon us. He adopted us.
Galatians 4:4 God sent his Son, … 5 that we might receive the full rights of sons. 6 Because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, “Abba, Father.” 7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son; and since you are a son, God has made you also an heir.

Who am I?
I am a man created in God’s image, I am loved by the creator of the Universe, I am a child of the King of kings because He adopted me, I am known by God and I am wanted.

Psalm 139:1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me. 2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. 3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. 4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD. 5 You hem me in–behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me. 6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
God knows your heart, God knows your actions, God knows your ways, God knows your thoughts, God knows your needs
Wow – How can God love me so much?

I know Who I am but Why am I here?
What’s my purpose?

Ecclesiastes 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole [duty] of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.

Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God–this is your spiritual act of worship. 2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is–his good, pleasing and perfect will.

Matthew 22:36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?” 37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’

I know Who I am and Why I am here but Where am I going?
What’s my Destination

Revelation 21:2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

Philippians 3:10 I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. … 13 … Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. … 20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ, 21 who, by the power that enables him to bring everything under his control, will transform our lowly bodies so that they will be like his glorious body.

When we know this, we know all we need to know, and it becomes our foundation for everything else we will ever need to know.
What else do we need to know?

We must know the truth of God’s Word so we can defend against false doctrines.

1 Timothy 6:20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge, 21 which some have professed and in so doing have wandered from the faith.

We need to know God’s Word so we can teach

Hebrews 5:12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.

Husbands need special knowledge
1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Dwell with them according to knowledge; study your wife and know her needs and desires.
Wives teach your husbands – in counseling I always tell wives that men are stupid we need told what you need.
We will meet your needs if you tell us and remind us.
We often don’t know what you need because you don’t know what you need today. We try to figure it out but we are having a hard time.

We need to know God’s Word so we can be equipped for good work.

2 Timothy 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

2 Peter 1:5 For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; … 8 For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Will you add knowledge to your faith?
Let me remind you of one more piece of knowledge.

Romans 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus

Live in the freedom of that truth.
Understand that the opposite is true also. If you are not in Christ then you are condemned.

God doesn’t want you to be condemned – that is why He sent Jesus to die for you.

1 Timothy 2:3 … God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave himself as a ransom for all men.

Will you come to repentance today so you will be saved?
Come ready to trust Jesus with your life.
Get on His back and let Him carry you through the turmoil of this life into His Glorious presence.

Softly and Tenderly Jesus is calling
